How to Configure a Custom Bounce Domain
Custom Bounce Domain Mapping is an optional feature that allows you to route bounce emails through your own subdomain rather than using the default provider domain. This improves email deliverability and eliminates the "via" label that appears in Gmail when emails are sent through third-party services.
What Is a Bounce Domain?
A bounce domain (also called Return-Path domain) is used to receive bounce messages when an email fails to deliver. By default, MailerLogic manages this automatically.
With Custom Bounce Domain Mapping, you can route bounce handling through your own subdomain while MailerLogic continues processing the bounces in the background.
What It Does
- Routes bounce emails through your branded subdomain (e.g., bounce.yourdomain.com)
- Eliminates the "via" label in Gmail, making emails appear more professional and trustworthy
- Improves sender reputation by maintaining consistent domain branding throughout the email delivery process
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Access Your DNS Records
Navigate to 'Sending Domains'. Click the 'View' icon to see your DNS records.
Step 2: Bounce CNAME
Under your domain's DNS & verification records, you'll see an optional section labeled 'Bounce CNAME'.
Step 3: Add the CNAME Record
Create the following DNS record with your domain registrar or DNS provider:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | CNAME |
| Name/Host | bounce.yourdomain.com (or your chosen subdomain) |
| Value/Points to | bounces.mailerlogic.io |
Step 4: Verify the Record
Once added, return to your sending domain settings and click 'Verify' to confirm the DNS record is properly configured.
DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate. Once verified, your domain status will update to Verified.
Configuring a custom bounce domain gives you greater control over your email infrastructure while improving domain alignment and brand consistency. Once set up and verified, MailerLogic will continue handling bounces automatically, now fully aligned with your domain.
